Critics Say State Government Fails to Adequately Monitor Agricultural Pesticide Use

Critics say Florida's monitoring and inspection program is drastically understaffed, underfunded and undermined by political pressures that have made it dangerously ineffective. Florida farmers employ 196 pounds of pesticides to grow an acre of tomatoes, according to federal figures. In contrast, California, the country's top agricultural producer, uses 51 pounds. An acre of California oranges requires 18 pounds of those active chemical ingredients, while Florida oranges need 71 pounds an acre.

Farm Workers Fearful to Report Pesticide Exposure

Farmworkers have more to worry about than anyone else when it comes to pesticides. Many Florida workers interviewed in recent weeks say they are affected by agrichemicals. Workers almost never report incidents of pesticide exposure because they are afraid of being fired. Despite the recent passage of state laws allowing farmworkers to ask for information on the pesticides being used around them, the workers rarely do so.

Efforts To Reduce Accidents on Rural 'Farm-To-Market' Roads Subject of Safety Council's Meeting

A newly-formed regional transportation safety council which is overseen by the Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation (PART) met for the first time on April 4, 2005 and immediately began looking for ways to reduce the number of farm vehicle-related traffic injuries and fatalities and to improve overall safety on the Piedmont Triad's rural roads. The council, which will be funded by PART and will likely meet quarterly for the next eighteen to twenty-four months, will seek to join its safety efforts with those of state and federal agencies with the same goal in mind: cutting traffic fatalities and serious injuries, particularly those occurring on the Triad's rural roads.
